Guidelines to Follow while Visiting Primates in the Wild

Primate Watching in Uganda

Visiting primates in the wild is one of the thrilling and rewarding experiences during an African safari. On the African continent, there are almost 216 primate species protected in about 10 destinations. Of all the 10, 3 countries on the East African region – Uganda, Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo are the most common destinations for different primate species like mountain gorillas, chimpanzees, golden monkeys and others. Some of these primate species like Mountain gorillas are known for being susceptible to human and infections and always become stressed if too many visitors approach too closely. But to protect and reserve these apes, guidelines during the trek have been put in place and greatly developed. In this article, we have brought you some of the guidelines to ensure your visit is safe, ethical, and minimally disruptive to the primates and their habitat:

  1. Follow Local Rules and Guidelines

As you are preparing for the primate trekking experience, you will have a pre-trek briefing where you will be given different rule and regulations. To ensure that both your life and that of the primate is safe, we advise you to abide by the rules set by the park or reserve authorities. Also, always ensure that you are accompanied by the trained guide.

  1. Maintain a Safe Distance

During your primate trekking experience like gorilla trekking, you are advised to stay at least 7-10 meters (20-30 feet) away from the primates. This reduces the risk of transmitting diseases to them or even causing harm to you. Also, as you maintain the distance, never attempt to touch or feed the primates.

  1. Respect Their Space and Behavior

Primates are known for playful behaviors during their time in the jungle. So, as you are going for the trekking experience, endeavor not to block their movement or surround them. Also, avoid eye contact, as it can be perceived as aggression by some species.

  1. Avoid Flash Photography

As you’re taking pictures of the primates for future use, avoid using flash lights since it can disrupt their natural behavior. For good pictures, opt for a camera with a good zoom lens instead.

  1. Practice Good Hygiene

Primates are known for being highly susceptible to human diseases. For that case, you are not allowed to visit if you are sick to prevent transmitting diseases. Before and after your encounter with the species, endeavor to wash your hands, and also wear a mask if asked by the reserve to minimize disease transmission.

  1. Leave No Trace

During the primate watching experience, avoid leaving trash or belongings in the primate habitat. Also, remember to always follow the range guides through the designated trails to avoid damaging the habitat.

In conclusion, by following these above guidelines, you will have a successful primate safari and contribute to the protection of the species and their ecosystems while ensuring a fulfilling and respectful wildlife experience.
